Do Your Research
Before you start your search for a vehicle, it's best to not start searching blindly. Decide if there is a certain type of car, truck or SUV that will suit your needs best. For example, if you have kids, maybe you need a vehicle with a third row, or perhaps you'd really like hands-free phone capabilities. By choosing what type of vehicle to look for, you'll have a more specific list of items to inspect. You can also find out the common problems for the models you're considering.
Exterior Checks
A good idea is to always check the condition of the car's body. Take a walk around the vehicle and note any dents, rust or scratches. Also check out the body panels — everything should line up evenly, and the doors, hood and trunk should open and close without any problems. While walking around the vehicle, you should also inspect the tires. They all should be the same brand and should be in solid conditions (meaning no cracks, bulges, scuffing or worn tread). Lastly, also check the lights, both front and rear, and make sure they all work properly. There should be no cracks or any damage and no signs of moisture.
Interior Checks
When inspecting the inside of the vehicle, one of the most important things to check for is any odors. If the vehicle smells like mold, must or mildew, that could indicate a water leak or flood damage. Also, be sure to check the seats for any wear or any tears in the upholstery. Ensure the seats work properly and that you can move the driver's seat into a comfortable position for you. Always test out the controls and instruments to check that they are functioning correctly. Finally, take a peek at the roof to look for any signs of stains or water leaks through a sunroof or window.
Under the Hood
Be sure to lift the hood and check the belts, hoses, fluids, oil and transmission fluid. Everything should be at the correct level, and there should be no cracks, leaks or water. A smart idea is to also take a peek beneath the vehicle for any leaks.
The Test Drive
The test drive is perhaps one of the most important parts of your inspection. When starting the engine, note how long it takes the car to start and listen for any odd noises. Drive the vehicle on different roads so you can test it at different speeds. Additionally, note if the transmission shifts smoothly and if the brakes provide good stopping power without pulling the car to either side.
Paperwork and Mechanic's Inspection
Before closing the deal on the car, truck or SUV, obtain the vehicle identification number (VIN) and run a Vehicle History Report. Most dealers will provide a report on all of their used vehicles. You can also have a trusted repair shop thoroughly inspect the vehicle before you purchase it.
